Press Releases - 26th October 2006

Brit's Christmas shopping preference now an equal split of online and offline

Research by incentive site GreasyPalm.co.uk shows that the majority of people (53%) now prefer to split their Christmas shopping activity equally between online and offline sales. 32% of people surveyed said they would be shopping 'mostly online' this Christmas for their gift purchases. Just 15% say they still prefer to shop 'mostly offline.'

48% of those preferring to shop online stated their primary motivation was to save money, with 31% saying because it saved them time. The money-saving focus was further reinforced by 74% stating they would be using a shopping comparison engine to find the cheapest prices. Whilst time & money saving were the most popular reasons for online shopping, 'no crowds' was still an important factor, with women especially: 26% of women preferring to shop online gave this as their main reason, compared to just 13% of men.

The majority of online shoppers know exactly which retailers they wish to visit in order to conduct their purchases - 61% of people are decisive in making their online purchases and undertake them in a short amount of time with a known retailer. 39% of online shoppers are more distracted, unsure which retailer they want to visit, lots of browser windows open with each gift purchase taking some time to undertake.

Interestingly, many people will be conducting at least some of their Christmas shopping during work hours, when the bosses aren't looking. 53% either shopped 'sometimes' or 'very often' during work time, not including lunch breaks.

Marketing Director of GreasyPalm, Neil Durrant, comments:

"These results reveal that online shoppers are quite focused in their efforts to save money, above all else. Whilst this is usually important, it takes an even higher prevalence at Christmas with so many gifts to buy. Convenience is also a factor - 76% of people usually conducting their Christmas purchases over many different trips, gradually building up their collection of gifts - the internet is a great enabler for this type of activity".
